Last week, five Transition Year students from Loreto College Cavan travelled to The Netherlands on the Erasmus+ programme with Ms. L. Fitzpatrick. The students were Willow May Hourihane, Clodagh Kennedy, Emer O'Flynn, Kaioni Tuipulotu and Maeve Young.

In preparation for the Erasmus trip, the Music Teacher from the host school in Holland sent an instrumental melody and chorus via email to a song which would become the Erasmus+ song , 'Key to the Future'. Each country participating (Ireland, Greece, Spain, Norway, Holland and Romania) had to come up with English lyrics for a verse to represent their country. The theme was 'Social Inclusion'. The six verses would be put together and performed in Holland.

As part of CSPE and SPHE Wellbeing, our first years took part in a “5000 steps to Wellbeing Activity”. They engaged in Wellbeing activities in class including artwork, stress busters and group activities and on Monday 27th of May they all participated in a Slí na Sláinte walk, followed by Ice cream and games in the canteen. They enjoyed some “down time” for Wellbeing before the busy spell of Summer exams. Well done to all involved.

“There is no one giant step that does it. It’s a lot of little steps!”.

Students from Transition Year in Loreto College Cavan organised a very successful blitz for primary school girls last week. The TY future Leaders committee along with the entire TY year have spent the last couple of months preparing and organising this blitz. It took a lot of commitment, dedication and diligent work from all the students and on the day, they executed the blitz excellently. All the girls at the blitz got plenty of game time and they all received a healthy goody bag.

Green-Schools Irish Water Awards 2019


On Wednesday, 1 May 2019 students from across Ireland were honoured for their efforts promoting water conservation and awareness at an award ceremony in The Radisson Blu Hotel Dublin. We are delighted that Loreto College, Cavan was named as Secondary Water School of the year for the Western Region at that ceremony. We were presented with a trophy, a Green Flag for Water and a cheque for €750. This award is the culmination of two years of hard work by the Green Schools Committee to raise awareness of the importance of water conservation in our school and community.

Three of our Fifth year students, Sorcha Finan, Sana Cheema and Eimear Rudden, took part recently in the Model United Nations competition in Dublin Castle. This event is run by the European Commission and they completed against teams from 27 other schools from around the country. Their allocated country was Austria so they were arguing the Austrian position in simulation of a United Nations debate. The girls represented Austria and Loreto College Cavan very well. Their experience in the European Youth Parliament showed. All three have qualified for National finals of EYP and Sorcha took part in an international session of EYP earlier this year. Congratulations to the girls.

On Tuesday March 12th members of the Cavan Cross Cultural Community visited Loreto College Cavan. The event was organised as part of the Erasmus+ project in which our TY students are participating this year and also to coincide with the school's Intercultural Week.The speakers each gave accounts of their personal experiences both before leaving their home countries and then on arrival in Ireland. It was most informative for our students to hear how different life can be for others and the girls were very receptive of the speakers. It was a very enjoyable and educational experience for all involved.
