Loreto College is pleased to announce the resumption of its German language exchange programme with EGW secondary school: www.egwoerth.de/
Europa Gymnasium (EGW) is a mixed school with 120 teachers and 1,300 students aged between 13 and 18. The school is situated in the German federal state of Rhineland-Palatinate, a region famous for winemaking, agriculture, forest trails and historic castles. The school is situated in Wörth am Rhein (pop 17,000) on the left bank of the Rhine, approximately 10 km west of the city of Karlsruhe and just north of the German-French border. Daimler AG's biggest truck production plant has been the town's chief employer since 1960.
The German language exchange programme is now in its 8th successful year, and is run in cooperation with St Patrick's College, Cavan. Successful applicants travelled to Germany in October 2022 and spent one week with their exchange partner, immersed in school and family life. German students will visit Ireland in April 2023. By offering full immersion in the language, the aim of the exchange is to develop spoken German and an appreciation of German culture in an authentic setting. In providing this valuable link with a student in Germany, it is hoped that students go on to develop this link into senior cycle.
Applications will open in January 2023 to students going into TY next year, who intend to study German for Leaving Certificate. Interested students can pick up an application form from their German teacher.
